Potty Training

Marissa is 22 months old. Far too young for potty training, in my mind. But at her 18-month check up, her pediatrician mentioned that "any time now" is a good time to start. We went to the store that afternoon to buy some pull-ups, undies, and a little potty. For several months now, she has told us as soon as she pooped. She also has been watching me when I use the bathroom. Sometimes she will randomly jump up, run toward the bathroom, start to pull her pants down, and say "pee-pee, pee-pee!" We've put her on the toilet several times, but she hasn't gone yet. She knows exactly what to do on the toilet though - she needs some toilet paper! Right now, it's just a pain though, since she doesn't actually do anything on the toilet. I'm so clueless about this whole potty training thing. So far, it's the most confusing part of parenting for me. I don't want to stop her from "using the potty" but until she actually "goes" it seems to be a waste of time and energy. Should I even bother? I feel bad turning her down, especially since she gets so excited to use toilet paper. Lol. But I'm so sick of changing poopy diapers! I could really use some tips on this whole potty training business, k? Thanks :-)

No tips from me. We're waiting until MUCH later to PT the boys.

PS. Thanks for stopping by my blog!

What about using something similar to pull-ups that are cloth diapers? Maybe feeling it will make a difference. I am told babies who use cloth potty train 1-2 years before others.

You could also take ideas from those who infant potty train. Think of the times when she most often goes... For me it is right after waking. They also both poo right after breakfast and dinner. So, you could have her sit on the potty during those times.

While she is there, read a book together or something. That way she is there for a bit and maybe has more of a chance.

Good luck!

Thanks for your coment on my blog!! You mentioned a onesie and buttoned or zippered jammies- my little one gets right through those!!! She demanded to use the potty about three weeks before her 2nd birthday and has been using it pretty consistently ever since. We bought pull ups for her for during the day, but she only wanted to wear them for about 2 days before she wanted underwear. She wears one to bed and for nap, but can take them off at any moment. You never know what you might find when you go in to get her! I don't think there's really any one way to potty train- you almost have to take their lead. My son, who is almost 4, still has issues with the potty! It just depends on the child. I think my daughter wanted to learn so early because of her older brother.

I so wish that I could help you here.. But I'm more clueless than you! I read your blog for advice on my baby and not the other way around because Brooke is so much younger. Lol! Thankfully for me, you'll have all of the answers when it's my turn:-)

How much did she weigh at her check-up? Is everything okay with her?

We are going to buy a potty soon for our 18 month olds. Not for true training, but so that it's around and they can sit on it if they want. At our daycare I think it's around age 2 that they generally start encouraging the kids to pee and poop on the potty (I learn a lot from how they do things at the daycare!).
There are a lot of good books on potty training. But bottom line is, it's up to you and your daughter to figure out what will work for you! I have heard, though, that if you wait TOO long it can be harder because you miss a good window for learning and they get more fussy about it...
